Telling a Story Bottom to Top

Cornerstone University MaceThe Cornerstone University Mace is comprised of a series of symbols arranged from the bottom to the top of the mace that tell the story of the biblical narrative and the university’s mission and that connect the university’s roots to the State of Michigan.

At Cornerstone University, a biblically Christianworldview (sometimes called a world and life view or a philosophy of life) is used as a foundation for scholarship and modeled as a way of life. Teaching a Christian worldview allows the university to fulfill its mission “to enable individuals to apply unchanging biblical principles in a rapidly changing world.” Those unchanging principles from the Bible are best understood as part of a fully developed Christian worldview proclaiming the lordship of Christ in all of life.

At Cornerstone University, a Christian worldview is constructed around four key events in the biblical text: Creation, Fall, Redemption and Consummation. Each of these Christian worldview events is portrayed in outdoor sculptures located on the Cornerstone University campus. The sculpture “Redemption” owns roots in the university’s history, but each of the other three sculptures were designed, sculpted, and given to the university by Mr. Jim DeVries. The mace portrays each Christian worldview event, beginning with creation near the lower end of the mace and moving upward to consummation at the top of the mace. Thus, both the campus sculptures and the mace artistically and tangibly tell the story of Cornerstone University’s commitment to a biblically Christian worldview.
