The six sterling silver plaques located near the lower end of the mace each replicate one of the bronze plaques featured in the sculpture “Creation” located on campus near the Robert T. Ketcham Building. These plaques tell the biblical story that the eternal, Sovereign God created the universe out of nothing as a direct act of his divine power and will. He filled this universe with stars, planets, plants, animals, and human beings who are made in his image; and he declared all of his creation “very good.” Human beings are both permitted and commanded to enjoy God’s workmanship in creation.
God also commands human beings to steward his creation. Men and women of all races, ethnicities, and nationalities are divinely called to exercise their creative energies as a reflection of God’s image, to develop the earth’s resources responsibly, and to create culture with excellence as a gift unto God. Christian education is one example of how human beings can learn more about God, themselves and this world – reality as God defines it – thus advancing human ability to please God by using his creation for his purposes.
