Scripture: Stones

Golden EaglesThe stones carved in the top portion of the mace just under the Golden Eagles represent Christian people and community. In 1 Peter 2, Scripture states that Jesus Christ is “the living Stone” or “cornerstone.” Followers of Christ are called “living stones” who are “being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Christians are “being built” – they are an unfinished and an ongoing spiritual project.

As “living stones,” which are part of a “spiritual house,” Christians may express both individuality (stones come in all shapes and sizes) and community (stones share the same purpose and enjoy both fellowship and strength in unity). This spiritual house is built upon the “cornerstone,” the One who is permanent, who cannot be moved, who integrates, sets direction and establishes stability.

The Holy Spirit resides in this spiritual house and provides the spiritual mortar for the living stones, wrapping himself around believers’ different shapes and sizes, filling in the gaps in relationships and abilities, and protecting the house from harm. One living stone does not make a spiritual house. Each member of the Cornerstone University community of faith needs each other member in the spiritual house.
