A Word from Dr. Orpha Galloway

My involvement in this adventure progressed from “What is a mace?” to a deep appreciation for a historically valued tradition. The major challenge came in painstakingly analyzing who we are at Cornerstone University. “What is the essence of our institution?” “Why do we exist?” “What are our unchanging beliefs, our traditions and purpose, our aspirations . . .?”

Logically, this pursuit led directly to our university worldview. At every level of our institution, we are committed to an understanding of God’s historic purposes as revealed in the biblical narratives of creation, fall, redemption and consummation. These four major events explain the past, give us clear direction in the present and provide a wonderful expectation for the future. Further, this foundational truth is intrinsically essential for “studying to show ourselves approved” as we fulfill the Great Commission and assume our position as specially gifted individual “stones” built upon our Cornerstone, the Lord Jesus Christ. For me, the study became a rich spiritual experience.

Dr. Orpha GallowayIt was one thing to establish the philosophic basis for our mace, but quite another to research and finally choose appropriate icons to properly represent our ideals. We wanted artistic symbolism, arranged in logical sequence, while creating a totally original, beautiful work of art which would reflect our commitment to excellence doctrinally and aesthetically.

A parallel pursuit involved finding the appropriate artists to consummate our ideas, ideals, and design in finished product. Our search for the proper artisans extended internationally. After considerable research, I believe we were led directly to talented area artists who not only understood, but shared our Christian worldview. We were blessed at every stage of planning and realization.

I am grateful to President Rex M. Rogers for his constant encouragement, input and critique. I also add my thanks for the creative expertise, excitement and invaluable input contributed by the people and firms listed in our acknowledgements.

I trust that the new Cornerstone University Mace will be held in respect over the years as it leads our official processions. It has been a rich privilege for me to have been involved in its creation, and I am truly honored to be the inaugural mace bearer. I pray that the doctrinal statements and ideals embodied in our unique mace will always be at the heart of Cornerstone University.
