This (minor) course covers the principles of coaching as it relates to the athletes: dealing with parents, media, and fans, how to handle tough situations and officials. In addition,
The courses cover the physical, psychological, and sociological aspects of the athletic experience. Other items: motivational techniques, response to players’ injuries, and where applicable, recruiting methods. It includes managerial skills common to all coaching activities.

What types of students succeed in this program?

Students who enjoy physical activity and competition, display an interest in teaching (coaching) may enroll in the coaching minor at CU. Students who enjoy and excel in athletics and intramural activities would also benefit from the coaching minor. Any student who is interested in coaching and the teaching of young adults in sports skills, team relationships, and how to handle competitive situations in a socially and biblically acceptable way should apply for a minor in coaching. This minor will teach you how to become the best coach you can be.

What can I do with this major or minor?

The coaching minor includes the study and development of a theoretical base for teaching the sport and sport skills with practical application and with a view that athletic participation should be fun. This minor might also lead students into camping ministry, YMCA work, etc. Students will develop a personal coaching philosophy with a Christian perspective as well as an emphasis upon ethics in coaching/teaching. A key focus of the minor will be to provide the student with cutting edge coaching methods and techniques as well as to help develop proper attitudes and actions in dealing with competition.

What are some of internships or partnerships with this program?

Internships can be arranged through the Kinesiology Department with area coaches.
Internships are arranged only at the request and discretion of CU. Multiple opportunities for coaching and serving the community through teaching and officiating are available to students of all experience levels.

What is the future outlook with a degree in this area?

Opportunities for coaching will only increase with the continuing growth of athletic/ recreational needs in our society!
