MEN'S SOCCER
Cornerstone University Seniors Dave DeBoer and Ben Hanson have been named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 4 Team for men’s soccer (http://www.cosida.com/documents/2009/10/29/09-m-soccerAllDistrict.pdf). DeBoer (1st Team) and Hanson (2nd Team) were chosen as College Division defenders. The recognition for the two defenders was announced on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). As a First Team All-District honoree, DeBoer has made the ballot for the prestigious ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team that will be announced on November 18.
DeBoer, a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a Physical Education major at Cornerstone with a 3.99 cumulative grade point average. The senior captain is a two year starter at the central back position. He is two time Academic All American. Hanson, a native of Lowell, MI is a Business major with a 3.98 cumulative grade point average. The senior captain has started all four years as an outside defender and is also a two time Academic All American.
The Academic All-District Team is a part of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program that honors student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level in athletics and in the classroom. Members of the eight First Team Academic All-District squads advance to the national ballot, where they have the opportunity to be selected for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA; a 2,000-plus member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintains a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports. Cornerstone has had one other Academic All-American selection (Tom Skilling-2006) named to the prestigious program.
