The Golden Eagles Men's Soccer team had a very successful season on the field, and were just as successful in the classroom. Two players, Senior Tom Skilling and Junior Trevor Christie were named to the 2006 Daktronics Academic All-American team this past week.

Tom Skilling has been named Region VIII Player-of-the-Year for the 2006 season. Skilling received the most votes in the region to be awarded the honor. Skilling made the All-Region team three times during his career at Cornerstone. Patrick Wilson II was also named to the All-Region First Team. Wilson led the Golden Eagle defense as a central defender. Goalkeeper Brent Grube was also honored by making the Second Team. Click here to view the full teams.
(Grand Rapids, Mich) The Golden Eagles are going to be hosting the Region VIII Championship on Saturday after defeating Indiana Wesleyan (3-1) on PK's this afternoon. The game ended in a 2-2 tie but Cornerstone prevailed in the penalty kick shootout. (Grand Rapids, Mich.) Cornerstone Men’s Soccer followed up their regular season title with the WHAC Tournament Championship today. Cornerstone defeated Madonna 2-1 to take the title. Sam Oberlin from Lowell put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 in the 6th minute of play on a shot that deflected off a Crusader player and found the back of the net. The Golden Eagles accomplished a difficult task today as they defeated Davenport 1-0 to advance to the WHAC Championship game. The Golden Eagles beata very talented Davenport team for the third time this season. Shane Stokes put Cornerstone up 1-0 in the 11th minute by heading in a Tom Skilling cross. After helping lead his team to their second ever WHAC regular season men’s soccer championship, Cornerstone University senior mid-fielder Tom Skilling has been named WHAC men’s soccer Player-of- the-Year by conference coaches. Skilling scored eight goals on the year and was second in the league in points and assists. The Golden Eagles defeated Indiana Tech 3-1 today to put them back on top of the WHAC. Zach McCabe scored two goals to lead the Golden Eagles to victory. Cornerstone University junior forward Sam Oberlin is the WHAC menĀ’s soccer Player of the Week for October 9th, The Lowell, Michigan native was a key factor in CUĀ’s 2-0 week, scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over Davenport. For the week, Oberlin tallied four total points, pulling the Golden Eagles into a first place tie in conference play.
The Golden Eagles looked to be headed for their sixth tie when Matt Kunnen scored on a goal mouth scramble with about .50 seconds remaining in the second OT to give Cornerstone a 1-0 victory. The Golden Eagles are gettingto makea habit of playing overtime games so far this year. Cornerstone tied their fourth game of the season in a 1-1 game against Madonna today. Chike Taylor-Phillips put the Golden Eagles on the board in the 10th minute of the game on a Brad Verburg assist. Verburg played a through ball to Taylor-Phillips and he beat the Madonna goalkeeper in a 1 v 1 to the left side of the goal. The Rockford, Michigan native posted a pair of goals on the week, one in each game for the Golden Eagles. Skilling totalled five points on the week with two goals and an assist as Cornerstone registered a pair of ties versus Mount Vernon Nazarene and Roberts Wesleyan.
