Ripley Repeats as National Runner-Up

May 23, 2009

(Edwardsville, IL) On the final day of competition of the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, Zach Ripley successfully defended his second place performance from 2008 in the 3000 meter steeplechase.

The race was nearly a duplicate of last year, with Aaron Melhorn taking the lead from the gun and cruising to the win in 9:00.74. Ripley ran patiently with the leaders, bouncing between third and sixth for most of the race. In the final lap he worked his way to third then pulled away in the last 150 meters to take second in a personal best time of 9:03.61. Teammate Alex Green placed eleventh in 9:23.94.

Earlier in the day, the warm humid conditions got the best of Stephan Larson, forcing him to drop out of the marathon near the midpoint of the race.
