The 2006 Women's Soccer team accomplished many great things on the field throughout the year including their first ever conference championship. The team was just as successful in the classroom as four student-athletes were named to the 2006 Academic All-American Team earlier this week. Ashley Reiman, Sarah Owens, Mary Koscielniak, and Carolyn Walton all earned the honor for the 2006 soccer season.

Cornerstone will open the NAIA Region VIII Tournament against host Spring Arbor at 12:00 p.m. on Friday. The Golden Eagles are to #2 Seed from the WHAC and Spring Arbor is the #1 Seed from the MCC. #1 Seed from the WHAC (Siena Heights) will take on #2 Seed from the MCC (Indiana Wesleyan) at 2:30 p.m. in the other Semi-Final. The Final will be played at Spring Arbor on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Golden Eagles dug a bit of a hole in the first half conceding two goals in the first 15 minutes of play. The first goal came just 10 minutes into the game on a ball that took a great bounce for Siena Heights. Ashley Dean and a Siena Heights player battled for a ball in the box. Both players fell down and the ball sat right in front of the goal for Kira Vonderbenken who finished the shot from about 10 yards out. After helping lead her team to the WHAC regular season championship, Cornerstone University senior forward Lena Baldwin has been named WHAC women’s soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Year by conference coaches. Baldwin led the league in all three offensive categories this season with 18 goals, nine assists and 45 total points. Cornerstone University junior forward Sarah Kaufman is the WHAC women's soccer Player of the Week for October 23, 2006. The Ada, Michigan native posted two goals and an assist in a 9-0 win over Indiana Tech. She followed up with the game-tying goal in their 1-1 tie with Siena Heights.
Cornerstone University senior forward Lena Baldwin is the WHAC women's soccer Player of the Week for October 16th. It is the second straight award for Baldwin and her third in four weeks. The Rockford, Michigan native scored a goal and assisted the two others in a 3-1 league win over Concordia. She then posted two goals in CU's 3-1 win over Aquinas. In the two victories, Baldwin totalled eight points. Baldwin was also named Region VIII Player of the Week.

Sarah Kaufman made a good first impression for the home fans today. Kaufman (a junior transfer from Huntington College) scored a hat trick in her first home game. The women's soccer team received an early season confidence boost as they posted a 3-0 win over Trinity International. Trinity Int'l received honorable mention votes in the pre-season NAIA ranking.
