Jim Farrell and his staff (Amber Jost, Mary Mauro, & Mindy Rader) were named NFCA Great Lakes Region (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, & Wisconsin) Staff of the Year. Farrell and his staff led Cornerstone to a seventh trip to the NAIA Region VIII tournament and a third national tournament berth since 2000. The Golden Eagles finished the season with a 27-23 mark, claiming the Region VIII tournament title.
Cornerstone will be going back to the NAIA National Softball Tournament again after defeating Madonna 9-1 in the Championship game this afternoon. The Golden Eagles remained hot at the plate and Leah Gruppen pitched her fourth consecutive 1 run game to guide the Golden Eagles to the Championship. Cornerstone opened the NAIA Region VIII Tournament with a resounding 10-1 victory over Marian (IN) this morning at Indiana Wesleyan. Jessica Dood hit a 3 run shot in the first inning, and Stefanie Polomcak added a grand slam in the second to give Cornerstone a 7-0 lead. Kassie Spangler hit a solo shot in the fourth to get Marian on the board butthe Golden Eaglesadded 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 10-1 lead. Leah Gruppen broke Tarrah Brown's record for wins in a season by winning her 23rd game against Indiana Tech today. The Golden Eagles split the double header at Tech. The Warriors won Game 1 (7-4) but the Golden Eagles bounced back to win Game 2 (3-1). The Golden Eagles took an early lead in Game 1 but the Warriors scored six runs in the bottom of the 5th inning which proved to be too much for Cornerstone as Indiana Tech took Game 1 by a score of 7-4. Jessica Dood went 2 for 4 and had an RBI in the loss.

The softball team traveled to Madonna for an important WHAC match-up on Saturday. The Golden Eagles came away with two victories. Cornerstone won the first game 5-2 and the second 1-0.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Siena Heights but Siena Heights responded with runs in the fourth and sixth inning to push the game into extra innnings.Lauren Jonesopened the ninth inning with a double and Emily Brown brought her home with a single as the Golden Eagles defeated the Saints 3-2 in Game 1 of the double header. The Golden Eagles dropped to 10-6 on the year after dropping a double header to Ferris State on Wednesday in their home opener. The Bulldogs out hit the Golden Eagles 11-6 in Game 1 and walked away with a 5-0 shutout. Leah Gruppen took the loss and dropped to 10-2 on the year. The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2 on a Stefanie Polomcak homre but the Bulldogs scored 12 unanswered runs over the next six innings to win 12-2. Sophomore Leah Gruppen was named WHAC Pitcher-Of-The-Week for March 14th. The Zeeland, MI native posted a 7-0 record while striking out 28 hitters, walking just two and posting a 0.90 ERA. Her perfect week pushed her season record to 10-0. The Golden Eagles finished their Florida trip with a 10-2 record. Cornerstone will return to action this Friday when they travel down to Indiana for the MCC/WHAC Challenge. The Golden Eagles will open play with Grace (IN) at 11:00 a.m.
Cornerstone finished their Florida trip with four more wins and did it in an impressive fashion. The Golden Eagles outscored their opponents 38-10 over the last two days. Cornerstone defeated Carlow (PA) and Robert Morris (IL) 12-2 and 11-4 on Thursday and turned around and beat Malone (OH) and Warner Southern (FL) by scores of 7-4 and 8-0. Jim Farrell was honored by the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) at the NFCA National Convention held in Orlando, FL. Farrellwas presented with a certificatefor reaching 100 victoriesas a head coach this past season. Farrell also recognized for earning his "4 Star" Certification through the National Fastiptch Coaches College. Farrell completed all 8 coursesoffered and was part of the first graduating class of the program.
