WOMEN'S TRACK
(Edwardsville, IL) On the opening day of the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Cornerstone’s women performed very well.
In the 1500 meters, Andi Owens was assigned to the second of two heats. To make Saturday’s final, Andi to finish in the top four in her heat or run one of the four fastest times not in the top four from either heat. The first heat was very fast for a semi-final with Purity Biwott of Wayland Baptist winning in 4:35.74 and seventh place less than three seconds behind. Owens went to the starting line knowing she would need to be in the top four or run a personal best to advance. After a 1:14 opening lap, the pace slowed to 1:19 for the next 400 meters, making it slower than the first heat. The field of twelve women remained bunched together with Owens spending most of her time in the third lane, trying to keep from getting trapped on the inside. Approaching the bell lap, the packed began to churn as the runners tried to position themselves for what was now a 400 meter race. The top seeds took control and picked up the pace. As the pack strung out on the backstretch, the top four began to pull away. Owens, still on the outside began a patient but urgent pursuit. “Andi did a great job measuring out her kick,” said coach Rod Wortley. “Too many people try to match the first move that breaks things open and find themselves with nothing left for the last 100 meters.” With 200 meters remaining the top four were well clear and only Owens had any chance to join them. Her sprint carried her to a two second personal best and a spot in Saturday’s final as she took fifth in 4:38.23.
Kayla Wilson also turned in a personal best 1:03.92 in the 400 meter hurdles, taking third in her heat and advancing to Friday’s semi-finals in the 400 meter hurdles. Immediately after the race, Kayla headed over to the long jump where she placed seventh in her flight with a mark of 17’ .25”.
Amy Boyer had a solid first day in the Heptathlon running 15.73 in the 100 hurdles and clearing 5’ 1.25” in the high jump. After a 30’ 3.5” effort in the shot put, Boyer concluded her day clocking 27.10 in the 200 meters. Her score of 2620 put her in eighth with javelin, long jump and the 800 meters remaining on Friday.
Brandi Hagan placed seventeenth in the pole vault, clearing 11’ 5.75”.
