Stephanie Allers got a good look at what the competition will be like at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships later this month while competing at the Billy Hayes Invitational hosted by Indiana University.
The combination of good NCAA Division I schools as well as top NAIA programs from McKendree and Missouri Baptist meant nearly all events were deep in talent.

After setting personal bests in the snow and rain earlier in the season, Kara Smeltzer had no trouble improving on those performances in warm, sunny conditions at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University.
The third year senior from Marcellus, began with a 126’ 9” effort in the hammer throw followed by a 97’ 10” toss in the Javelin. Her mark of 110’ 3” in the discus put her just three inches off the school record in that event.

Stephanie Allers won the 100 meter hurdles at the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Ferris State University. Her time of 14.68 was well under the NAIA automatic qualifying standard of 14.90. Allers, a two-time All-American in the event earned her third trip to the NAIA Outdoor National Championships on May 25-27 in Fresno, CA.

Chilly conditions and a brisk wind made for less than ideal conditions but that didn’t keep Stephanie Allers from hitting NAIA provisional qualifying marks in two events and helping a relay team get a third.
The junior from Marne began the day running the second leg on the 4 x 100 relay. The combination of Solena Helm to Allers to Cassie Donley to Julie Brusie got the stick around in 49.33, just under the NAIA “B” standard of 49.35 and good for third.

Cathi Powell earned All-American Honors for the sixth time as she finished third in the Pentathlon at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. Powell scored 3394 points finishing behind Nardina Marsh of Missouri Baptist and Katie Kosmos of Doane College. Cathi’s total broke her school record for the event by 108 points
After completing the 60 meter hurdles, high jump and shot put, Powell broke the school record in the long jump. Her leap of 18’ 2.25” added 11.75” …
The quartet of Cathi Powell, Eliza Nyblad, Becca Busfield and Amy VanderSloot took second in the 4 x 800 relay at the Taylor Invitational in a provisional qualifying time of 9:53.28. For the first time since the 2001 season the Cornerstone Women’s Indoor Track & Field team has all three relays on the performance list for the NAIA National Championships.

After a week of two-a-day practices the Cornerstone Women’s Track & Field team was noticeably tired, but there were several noteworthy performances at the University of Chicago Indoor Opener.
Senior, Cathi Powel had a busy and productive day, winning the 55 meter hurdles in 8.79, finishing second in the 200 meters in 26.67 and setting a personal best of 34’ 11.75” to place fifth in the shot put.
