It's been a long road for the Golden Eagle Volleyball Team but they have finally punched their ticket to NAIA Nationals. Cornerstone defeated rival Madonna in the Great Lakes Regional 3-1 (30-27, 32-30, 27-30, 30-26) to advance to the NAIA National Tournament in San Diego beginning December 1st. The Golden Eagles defeated Indiana Wesleyan 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-28) to advance to the Region VIII Championship at Indiana Wesleyan. Amanda Rizor led the Golden Eagle attack with 15 Kills. Shannon Burmaster was name WHAC Player of the Year by the WHAC Coaches. Burmaster led the Golden Eagles with 5.5 Kills per game this season. Shannon was voted WHAC Player of the Week five times, Region Player of the Week three times, and National Player of the Week once this season. Burmaster also recorded 6.0 Digs per game and led the Golden Eagles with 65 Service Aces during the 2004 campaign.
Julie Brusie was named WHAC Libero of the Year by the WHAC Coaches. Julie was voted WHAC Libero of the Week every week except once during the season and was Regional Libero of the Week most of the weeks as well. Julie led the team in digs with 869 Digs (6.21 Digs per game) this season. Brusie also recorded 44 Service Aces.
Steve Burmaster was name WHAC Coach of the Year by the WHAC Coaches. Burmaster led the Golden Eagles to a share of the WHAC regular season title along with Madonna. Coach Burmaster has guided the Golden Eagles to their best season ever with a 44-3 record. He has won 83.6% (118 of 141) of his games since arriving at Cornerstone in 2002. Julie Brusie, a 5-foot-5-inch sophomore libero from West Branch, MI was named NAIA National Libero of the Week. Brusie helped Cornerstone to a 3-0 week, improving Cornerstone's record to 43-2 on the season. Brusie recorded 7.00 digs per game and a .956 pass percentage for the Golden Eagles. She also recorded a .973 serve percentage through three games.
The Cornerstone women's volleyball team set another standard last night after defeating Concordia University 3-0 (30-14, 30-15, 30-13). The win improves their overall record to 41-2 which passes the old mark of 40 wins set in 1999. Allison Park (pictured left) is the WHAC setter of the week for the first time in 2004 after earning the award four times a year ago.
