Cornerstone University Health Services

In Health Services we seek to enable each student to continue their Christ-centered higher education by learning stewardship of body, mind and spirit; and by providing quality professional health care to assist in learning self-care and injury/illness prevention.

H1N1 Vaccine Information (Updated 11/4/2009):

Health Services has received 150 doses of H1N1 vaccine and is making it available to individuals who are most at risk for severe complications from the H1N1 virus.

If you are a Cornerstone University, student, student spouse, employee or employee spouse, who is pregnant, is a caregiver for a child younger than six months old or have a medical condition that puts you at risk for severe complications from the H1N1 virus, please call Health Services at 616.222.1441 (option 3) to schedule an vaccination appointment.

You must call and schedule an appointment to receive the H1N1 vaccine; it will not be given to walk-ins.

We are not making H1N1 vaccinations available to children at Health Services.  Please contact your doctor to set up an appointment for your child to get an H1N1 vaccination.

The vaccine is available as both a shot and as a nasal spray.

.H1N1 Influenza Information

In response to the threat posed by H1N1, Cornerstone University Health Services staff as well as other members of the campus community worked this summer and fall to develop an H1N1 response plan. The three goals of this plan are to educate our community about the H1N1 virus, limit the spread of influenza-like illnesses and insure that students who contract influenza-like illnesses receive the best possible medical care.

Here is what we have done and are currently doing on campus to meet these three goals:

Through posters, peer education, fact sheets and electronic publications, we are educating the campus about the H1N1 virus, providing methods for preventing the spread of influenza-like illnesses, encouraging all campus community members to be vaccinated for both the H1N1 and seasonal flu viruses and exhorting ill students and employees to stay away from campus.

We are highly recommending that all students and employees get vaccinated for H1N1 once the vaccine becomes available. Depending on how the vaccine is distributed, Health Services will either offer the vaccine on-site at no charge to all students and employees or will communicate where it can be obtained.

We are highly recommending that all students and employees get vaccinated for the seasonal flu to minimize the possibility of dealing with two different strains of flu on campus. Health Services no longer has season flu shots available, and is  currently unable to purchase additional doses from our suppliers.  Season flu shots are available at:

Diplomat Pharmacy

Meijer,

Rite-Aid (by appointment)

Spartan Stores (including D&W and Family Fare)

Wal-Mart.

You can also find flu clinics using the American Lung Association Flu Clinic Locator.

Foodservice has added waterless hand sanitizer stations to the cafeteria line.

In accordance with CDC guidelines and our desire to see students treated as soon as possible we are responding to all students exhibiting influenza-like symptoms with the same policies and procedures. Flulike symptoms as defined by the Centers for Disease Control are fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, runny or stuffy nose, fatigue and sometimes diarrhea & vomiting.

We are encouraging all faculty and staff to identify and refer students who are exhibiting any influenza-like symptoms to Health Services for an evaluation.

We are strongly recommending all students who exhibit influenza-like symptoms to leave campus and either return home or to another off-campus location until they are symptom free for 24 hours. We are choosing this course of action because we believe that students can be best served through healthcare provided by their primary care physicians and families. We ask that residential students develop a plan their parents, other family members and/or friends to identify where they will go if they contract a influenza-like illness during this academic year.

We are requiring students with influenza-like illness who choose to remain on campus to notify their Resident Director and isolate themselves in their room, maintaining a 6’ distance from their roommates and other students, per CDC guidelines. These students are being required to call Health Services if their symptoms worsen. Community Life staff will assist the isolated student with getting meals and other requests.

Roommates of isolated students are being encouraged to either move home, move-in with an on or off campus friend, or maintain a distance of 6’ from their roommate until they are symptom free for 24 hours. Roommates are being encouraged to discuss these options with their Resident Director as soon as they are aware that their roommate is sick and choosing to remain on campus.

Students who miss class due to influenza-like illness will receive accommodation and assistance from their professors as outlined in the student handbook, academic catalogue and the course syllabus. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate their absence to their faculty members. Faculty members have been encouraged to waive or reduce penalties for missing class due to influenza-like illnesses.
