How do I fix a runtime error on Internet Explorer?

Symptom: Internet Explorer will not open and the below error message is given.

Cause: The MSN toolbar caused IE not top open. The program HiJack this recognized the program as a potential problem. Since this first issue with MSN toolbar, the yahoo toolbar and the google toolbar for IE has caused the same problem.

Fix: Go to add/remove programs and remove the problem toolbar and then try to re-launch IE, it should open.


How do I get to the safe mode?

  1. Restart your computer (or start it if it is completely off)
  2. When the black screen with blue Dell logo comes on, press F12 to get to the Boot Menu.
  3. From the provided options select Internal HDD using the up and down arrows and hit Enter.
  4. As soon as you do that hit F8 twice
  5. From the provided options select Safe Mode with Networking using the up and down arrows and hit Enter.
  6. When asked to select the operating system, just hit Enter.

What is reimaging?

Reimaging is the process of restoring your laptop's configuration to the way it was when you received it. This includes re-installing the operating system and all the programs that originally came with the computer. ALL DATA previously stored on the hard-drive IS LOST during this process.


How do I lock my computer?

Press "Ctrl", "Alt" and "Delete" at the same time. Then click on "Lock Computer". Now your computer is locked and nobody else can use it. When you return to your computer, press "Ctrl"-"Alt"-"Delete" again and log in. All your programs will still be open.


How do I run Windows Update?

              It is a good idea to run Windows Update on a frequent basis.  To run windows update, follow the directions as listed below:

  • Close any programs which you are using, since the computer will more than likely try to reboot after the updates are done installing. 
  • Go to the following website: http://www.update.microsoft.com
  • Click on the express button
  • Windows Update will update your system with the latest critical updates.  After all the updates have been installed, the computer more than likely will want to reboot.  Reboot the computer when prompted to.
