The Issachar Award is given annually to an individual whose life and achievements in any field of human endeavor embody Cornerstone University's mission: "To enable individuals to apply unchanging biblical principles in a rapidly changing world."
The university's mission is based upon the biblical text 1 Chronicles 12:32a which says, "Men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do." In preceding chapters, the Bible records the newly crowned King David's challenge of defeating the enemies of his weakened Kingdom of Israel and of God's provision of "Mighty Men" for the task. Among these "Mighty Men" whose legendary reputation was built upon physical prowess and experience in warfare are the Men of Issachar, a tribe of godly men known only for their understanding of the times and their ability to discern the path Israel ought to follow.
The Issachar Award recognizes individuals who understand their times and its culture, who know biblical truth, and who live out their biblical faith in a manner that influences and even changes their times and its culture. An Issachar Award recipient is a modern day "Man or Woman of Issachar," one that not only grasps the meaning of a Christian worldview for their own good but also exercises a leadership that applies their Christian values for the good of others. Issachar Awardees are in the best biblical sense men and women of God. They know truth and they seek to make it known. The accomplishments of their lives and work are testimonials of God's gifts rightly used as evidence in this world of God's grace. Men and Women of Issachar are Bible believers and world changers. An Issachar Award recipient models the ideals and contributions Cornerstone University wishes for all of its students and for all who name the name of Christ.
The Issachar Award, established February 18, 2003, is Cornerstone University's highest honor. It is given with gratitude to God for the life well lived of one of His choice servants.
