Student Life

One of the best ways to investigate and prepare for life at Cornerstone University is to become a Cornerstone University Insider. As a CUI you will have access to information that is relevant to you through your own personal Web page.

Fine Arts

The musical and performing arts provide you with opportunities to work with others, to grow as an artist and, ultimately, to give glory to God through your create talents. If you are musical, there are a number of small ensembles as well as large groups in which you can participate. CU also offers Music Scholarships to students who successfully audition. Our award-winning theatre productions allow you to be involved on stage, behind the scenes or in the audience.

Residence Life

The residence life experience creates a close-knit community where you can forge lifelong friendships in a safe environment. You'll be surrounded by students and staff who truly care about you, encourage you in your faith, comfort you through tough times and support you every step of the way.

Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is the second-largest city in Michigan with a population of more than 700,000 residents. GR blends the friendliness of a small town with all the spiritual, professional, social and personal possibilities of a big city.

CU students live and work on a campus only minutes away from all the action – the cultural and sporting events offered by the Grand Rapids Griffins Hockey Team and the Grand Rapids Symphony, beautiful parks, hundreds of miles of beaches on Lake Michigan and a variety of exciting outdoor activities including biking, hiking, ice-skating and downhill skiing.

Grand Rapids is a university city where many CU grads have decided to live after they earn their degrees.

Spiritual Life

We take being a Christ-centered university seriously! There are many ways that CU students can grow in their faith. Chapels occur on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9:00. Last year there were more than 70 discipleship groups both on and off campus. And Grand Rapids offers more than 700 churches within a 25-mile radius of campus.

Whether it's here in Michigan or halfway across the globe, you'll have many opportunities to put your Christian worldview into practice through local mission fields, mission trips and cross-cultural ministries.

Also, each residence hall wing has a Discipleship Coordinator - a student leader whose main focus is to encourage the men and women in their hall in their spiritual development.

Leaders for Life (Student Government & Leadership)

Leaders for Life is the official name for the comprehensive leadership program at Cornerstone. We desire that all CU students become leaders of character: ordinary men and women who do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God. Leaders for Life begins with Leadership Journey™, a year-long experiential training and mentoring program that happens throughout your first year at CU.

Other leadership positions that you may be involved can include Student Government (CUSG), Resident Assistants (upperclassmen leaders in the residence halls), Residence Hall Council (plans activities and events in the halls) and Sherpas (upperclassmen leaders who facilitate new students participating in Leadership Journey).

Social Life

Class is only a few hours each day, but life at Cornerstone happens 24/7. Whether you cheer on the Golden Eagles at Hansen Athletic Center, meet friends in the Corum Student Union for a game of pool and a latte, or listen to live local music at a nearby coffeehouse, there is always something happening on or around campus.

Some of the Cornerstone events and traditions include the Mud Bowl, Variety Show, Quincerpalooza, theatre productions, athletic events, concerts, Slop-fest and Spring Splash kids carnival.

But if that's not enough, you can take advantage of our ideal location and venture off-campus for some fun with your friends at the 20-screen cinema and IMAX that's a mile from campus, restaurants, concerts and events at the VanAndel Arena, one of the area's three major shopping malls, or enjoy the latest concert at DeVos Performance Hall. There's always something to do at CU!

The Herald (Newspaper)

The Herald, the official student newspaper, is published weekly during the academic year. Its content is produced by a student editorial staff, under the supervision of a faculty member, Assistant Professor of Journalism Alan D. Blanchard, who has more than 20 years’ writing and editing experience on daily/weekly commercial newspapers and magazines.

Students may participate on The Herald for academic credit or for zero credit, as course loads allow. Some key student newspaper editor and marketing jobs are paid positions.

Multicultural Organization

The Multicultural Organization promotes Biblical awareness, acceptance and appreciation of other cultures by providing opportunities for interaction, education and service. Members acknowledge personal biases, recognize and reconcile racial and cultural injustices and seek global perspective from a Christian worldview.

Activities of the MCO include regular meetings, campus activities, chapels, diversity forums, participation in area-wide events, and visits to area multi-ethnic churches.
