Goodbye?

May 8, 2009

I have had a great time this past year keeping you up to date on what has been going on at Cornerstone.  This is honestly a great school and I hope to see you next year.  Here are a few things to think about for next school year.

1) Don't bring too much stuff.  Alot of freshmen come overprepared.  Talk with your roommate and decide who is bringing what, so that you don't bring double of everything.

2) Get involved.  There are some great things to do on campus, and Cornerstone is continually working on different things to keep students active.  Go to the weight room, hang out in the Corum Student Union, get to know a commuter student and invite them to hang out in your room.

3) Find a mentor.  College is one of the best times to find a mentor to guide you through your journey.  A Christian college campus is probably the most concentrated area of genius Christians who can work with you on different areas of your life.  Plus, a mentor is also a great contact to add on a resume, which is something you will need down the road.  Just dont be afraid to ask.

4) Don't go home every weekend.  Be creative and find things to do.  There are alot of students at Cornerstone that will tell you how boring our Campus can be.  But, boring people are the only ones who get bored.  Cornerstone is trying to develop different activities to get students invovled on campus, but it is your job to actually try these things.  Get out, be a voice in the community!!

And if I dont see you next year, I hope to see you someday in His Kingdom.  Fight the fight and run the race!  Keep it up, and remember that it is all for Him!

What Makes a Great Professor?

Apr 16, 2009

It isn’t just that he buys his class pizza. But, Scott D. Morter, a finance professor at CU goes above and beyond his professorial role. Professor Morter knows every single one of his students by name. He will take time out of his busy schedule to talk to students about the questions they are dealing with in life. He has a soft-heart for all of God’s creation and cares for every single student, even the ones who ask dumb questions (and I have asked plenty of dumb questions). I think one of the most encouraging things he has done for me was to give me Micah 6:8 as a verse to live by; “8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God,” (NKJV). Scott D. Morter is more than my professor; he is my mentor, he is a number “9” on my speed dial, he is my Facebook friend- He is a great professor. If anyone reading this is questioning their major or minor-- think FINANCE.

IM Basketball

Mar 25, 2009

March Madness! So my buddies and I are in a little pool to see who can guess the NCAA div. 1 national champion in men’s basketball. My choice, as well as most others, is UNC (even though I am a Michigan State fan to the core) over Louisville in the big dance.

Anyways, Cornerstone couldn’t be left out of the madness! We just wrapped up another fun season of IM basketball last week. My team (the two-time reigning champs), unfortunately, lost in the semifinals. We were a three seed in the tournament and lost to an underdog 5 seed. The top four seeded teams were neck and neck in the rankings and were separated by less than 2 games.

My team ended the season with a 11-3 record, where 2 out of 3 loses were under five points. So we play a pretty tough schedule that lets us basketball lovers to compete at a competitive, but fun, platform.

Mr. Protector

Feb 23, 2009

I was sitting around on Friday night playing Call of Duty 4, just like every other Friday night. All of the sudden I get a phone call at 11 something at night. I thought it would be somebody wanting to hang out, so I picked up. On the other end of the phone were some friends of mine. Four girls to be exact and they were house sitting. They sounded horrified, and asked me to come right over.

Now what guy in his right mind wouldn’t go over to this house. 1) There are four girls. 2) There are four scared girls. 3) There are four girls.

So I get over to the house that these girls are house sitting and walk up to the front door. At this point I am still somewhat confused at the totality of their fear. When I get inside I ask the girls to fill me in on the story. Jodi says, “So Jade and I were in the hot tub and all of the sudden we heard this rustling noise behind us. It sounded like something was creeping up on us, something bigger than an animal. Once we heard it we stopped moving and talking, but so did it. We freaked out, ran inside, left all of our stuff behind, and called you.”

Now, me being a guy figured it was just a small animal that was rustling in the brush behind them so I offered to check things out while they got their stuff from outside and covered up the hot tub. Amanda still didn’t feel safe going outside where the girls heard the noise, so I handed her a golf club to whack the “creeper” if he came up again. I grab a flashlight and led the girls outside. I was looking around for footprints to see what kind of animal it was. I went behind the huge tree, where they said the noise was coming from, to take a look. At first I was relieved, because there were no footprints, but there was also no snow. So my lack of knowledge was good enough. I was satisfied. But right as I am hoping to go inside I look over where there is snow and see some footprints, fresh footprints.

What do I do? Do I tell the girls and freak them out, or do I keep it to myself when we are possibly in danger? I decided to tell Aubrey, she was the one who was put in charge of the house and happened to be the one closest to me in proximity when I was investigating. But what does she do? Freak out. She turned around, bolted to the door and told all the girls to get inside. Me wanting to show the girls that I am not scared, or I was plain ignorant walked slowly inside behind them.

Here’s another catch. When they ran inside from the hot tub the first time, they realized that the front door was unlocked and had been all day. And guess where these tracks led? They went around to the front of the house. To make all of us feel more comfortable, I offered to check every room in the house, it was what I always used to do when I was little to make sure no monsters were going to attack me. There was no sign of anyone in the house, but the footprints were still a little creepy so we decided to call the police. They got over to the house and checked things out (Really quickly I would like to thank our local officers for what they do for us). They told us, that the prints that went around the house lead back to the road, so the person is good and gone. Unfortunately they couldn’t trace where the prints came from because the snow was so spotty in areas. Anyways they said they were going stick around for awhile to make sure nothing happens.

After those exciting events I did happen to sleep well. And, praise the Lord, nothing happened. But when I saw my mom the next day and told her the story, all she could say was, “What? They called the biggest scaredy-cat they could. They must’ve been desperate.” Thanks Mom

What is college good for?

Feb 14, 2009

College is good for many things. Some might think it is the education and extended learning that makes a college education so valuable. Others might say it is the self-discipline that is instilled in a young adult when being away from their parents.   But, I say the greatest thing about college is having the friends around you that can share the same experiences with you as you grow together.

High school friends will always be around and your love for them will never pass away. But there is something about a friend who comes along when you are insecure about who you are in life and journey with you as you become the man that God created you to be. When we came to Cornerstone we are all just freshmen wondering what this university had to offer. And now we realize that the education that Cornerstone offers is just a small piece of the blessings from this great university.

I know this really isn’t my style of blog, but holla-atcha boy.
