ATLA Scripture Searching

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE SEARCHING in ATLA

ATLA SEARCHES:

1. Open First Search: select “Advanced Search”
2. “Search in:”---select “ATLAReligion”
3. Type in full name of biblical book into the “Search for” box.
• If a numbered book, follow the book name with a comma, and a space and the numeric equivalent of the book number (e.g. 1st, 2nd)
• If a specific chapter is desired, add the number (following a space).
e.g. corinthians, 1st 14 or john, 3rd 1 (enter this into the “search for” box)
4. Select “scripture citation phrase” field in the pull down box next to the search box
5. Click the “Browse Index” button (next to the pull-down menu in which the scripture citation field is selected.
6. Select the complete citation that best serves your needs. This will automatically be pasted into the search input box; a search may then be performed on that citation.
Note: Certain punctuation cannot be used. Commas and colons will be stripped from the scripture citation index. For example, Ruth 1:11-13,21 will look like ruth 1 11-1321 when viewed in the scripture citation browse index.

ATLA Book Review Search:
1.In the Advanced Search mode enter author name in the “Search for” field. Add title if you also know that.
2. Under “Document Type” select “Review” (not “Book reviewed”). >Search.

ATLA Journals listing—to see complete list of all 1426 periodicals indexed in
ATLA, click on the “i” (Information about database) button next to
“ATLAReligion” (“Search In” field). ATLA database. Scroll down to database
sources, and click on “All titles for ATLAReligion.”
