How to find Bible commentaries in Miller Library

  1. All Bible commentaries are shelved upstairs in the second floor stacks. They are in order of the books of the Bible, beginning with Genesis at BS1235. One exception to this is the set of Word Biblical Commentaries that are shelved for convenience in the Reference section (BS491.2) of the library, but for in-house use only.

  2. To get a list of all commentaries on a certain book, or to browse the online catalog for commentaries, do a SUBJECT search (for example on Genesis), type in: Bible O.T. Genesis commentaries (be sure to  include the period between the O and T). There is also an excellent book (in Reference: BS540.B38) that recommends the best commentaries and other biblical studies (Annotated Guide to Biblical Resources for Ministry, by Bauer).

  3. To find all commentaries in a certain series, such as Word Biblical Commentary, do a TITLE search, and type: Word Biblical Commentary

                               
  4. For a few older commentaries that are online (Matthew Henry; Jamieson-Faucett-Brown; Robertson's Word Pictures, etc) go to http://bible.crosswalk.com/Commentaries/

  5. Certain commentary sets are located at the beginning of the “BS” section—specifically BS491… The following sets are shelved together here, beginning with these old classics:

    Luther’s Works (actually shelved separately at BR330. E5)- see vol.55 for index
    Lange’s Commentary
    Beacon Bible Commentary (10 vol)
    Speakers Bible (19v)
    Gill’s Expositor (9 vol.)
    Biblical Illustrator (57 vol)
    Pulpit Commentary (52 vol)
    Clarke’s Commentary (6 vol)
    Maclaren’s Expositions (17 vol)
