RefWorks Help

To Start Using Refworks:

  1. Go to Library website, select “eResources;” then click on RefWorks.
  2. The first time only you will need to “Sign up for an individual account.”
  3. You will be given instructions for first time use after you’ve created the new account.
  4. From all off-campus computers you will also need to log in using our “Group Code” for institution-wide subscribers: Call Library for Group Code (for student access only)
  5. You may also want to load “WriteNCite” to your computer so that it automatically comes on with MS Word. Click on “WriteNCite” and follow the simple instructions for downloading to your desktop.
  6. You can do “direct exports” from these databases into RefWorks: FirstSearch, Linguistics Abstracts, Social Service Abstracts, ProQuest, and Project Muse.

Bibliographic Citations

Bibliographic citations are available from any of the following databases:
  • Miller Library's catalog
  • Any FirstSearch database
  • Social Services Abstracts
  • Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts
To find out how easy it is to export bibliographic citations from any of these databases, contact a reference librarian at 222-1458.
** Other databases will be added to this list as they become available to RefWorks.

Sample Import from WorldCat (in FirstSearch):

  1. Open WorldCat (or another FirstSearch database). Also log on to RW and keep it open.
  2. Find the books or articles you want to cite; if more than one, mark the ones you want to use
  3. Click on the “Export” tab near the top of the page. Indicate if you only want to export the “marked records.”
  4. Select Export to RefWorks, and hit “Export”
  5. If the export doesn’t happen automatically, open RefWorks and select “Import.”
  6. Once your records are imported, click on “Bibliography”; choose the Output style (MLA,etc). Then hit the “Create Bibliography” button. That’s all there is to it. Copy and paste the new Works Cited/Bibliography to your Word document.
