Business Specific Databases

General Articles: Magazines and Trade Journals

Usually presented in glossy paper with lots of color and photographs or in multimedia websites, business magazines are written for a popular audience with a general knowledge of business.  Trade journals are similar, but written for a specific region or industry.

  • ABI-INFORM (Proquest)
    • Provides a wide selection of business resources. Includes trade publications, local / regional business publications (i.e. Grand Rapids Business Journal), major business magazines (i.e. Fortune, Business Week), business newspapers (i.e. Wall Street Journal), and scholarly journals.
  • General Business File ASAP (Gale)
    • Provides industry overviews and short company profiles. Includes lots of industry trade journals, local/regional business publications, regional newspapers, and broker research reports.
  • Wilson Business Abstracts (First Search)
    • Abstracts to over 800 business publications. Includes trade publications, popular business magazines, and academic journals.

General Articles: Peer-Reviewed / Scholarly / Academic Journals

Called by a variety of names (peer-reviewed, refereed, scholarly, academic, etc.) these publications are targeted for an academic audience and sent through an editorial process by experts in the same subject area.

  • ABI-INFORM (Proquest)
    • Provides a wide selection of business resources (see description under Magazines and Trade Journals). To search exclusively academic journals in ABI-Inform, select the box beside "Limit results to Scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed."
  • Harvard Business Review (Indexed in ABI-Inform)
    • Miller Library holds issues of HBR in house from 1987 to present, and is indexed in ABI-Inform from 1971 to present. Only the years 1997-2000 are available full-text electronically online through Gale. If you are a distance education student and want a HRB article we hold, please contact us and we can scan and email the article to you.
  • Management & Organization Studies (SAGE)
    • A full-text collection of academic journals all related exclusively to management and organization studies. Journals date back to 1947. RefWorks export feature only works from on campus access link here.
  • Urban Studies & Planning (SAGE)
    • A full-text collection of academic journals all related exclusively to urban studies and planning. Journals span back to 1965. RefWorks export feature only works from on campus access link here.
  • Wiley InterScience Full-text Journals (Includes Blackwell Journals) 
    • A fulltext academic journal collection covering a wide range of subject areas such as business, computing, economics, health sciences, humanities, law, life and physical sciences, mathematics, medicine, social and behavioral sciences, and the arts.

Business News

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic
    • All full-text database which provides a wide selection of news resources: regional, national, and international newspapers (including the local Grand Rapids Press); selected web publications; news wire sources; and TV and radio broadcast transcripts.  Also includes a wealth of legal and company information.
  • InfoTrac Custom 150 Full Text Newspapers (Gale)
    • A collection of local and regional newspapers from across the United States.
  • Wall Street Journal (in ABI-Inform)
    • ABI-Inform is the only online resource to include Wall Street Journal, dating from 1984 to present.

Company and Industry Analysis

  • Business and Company Resource Center (Gale)
    • Detailed company and industry profiles providing links to news and information. Provides company profiles, brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies and periodicals.
  • Lexis-Nexis Company Dossier
    • This resource provides in-depth company profiles providing news reports, financial information, and legal information compiled from a variety of sources including Lexis-Nexis’s news sources, Hoover's, Morningstar, Standard & Poor's Register, SEC Filings, and US Federal and State Court Cases.
  • BusIndustry (First Search)
    • Business and industry facts, figures, and key events, especially for international companies, industries, and markets. Includes international (Non - United States) trade publications and newsletters.

Statistics

  • STAT-USA
    • Statistical data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, including general economic indicators, employment, manufacturing and industry, and housing and construction. Includes up to the quarter industry statistics.

 Interdisciplinary

  •  CQ Researcher
    • CQ Researcher offers in-depth, non-biased coverage of today's most important issues. Each report is on a single topic—more than 12,000 words of text and extensive bibliographies.
  • Facts on File Issues and Controversies
    • Explores more than 800 hot topics in business, politics, government, education, and popular culture.
  • Gale Powersearch
    • General database with broad collection of newspapers, magazines, academic journals, and trade publications from 1980 to present. Includes entries from encyclopedias, specialized reference sources, and radio and televison transcripts.
  • Opposing Viewpoints (Gale)
    • Overviews, full-text articles, statistics, and resources on social issues. Includes reference works and radio and televison transcripts.
  • Wilson Select Plus (First Search)
    • Completely full-text general interdisciplinary database with a wide collection of academic journals, trade publications, and magazines.

  • RefWorks
    • A personal database that allows you to download references from online databases and then formats them for use in bibliographies and research papers. You will need to create an individual account the first time you use this service. Click here for Help Using RefWorks.
  • Ulrich's Periodical Directory
    • Online guide to information about periodicals. Use this to find out if a periodical is peer reviewed (called refereed in this database).
