NAICS & SIC Industry Codes

Industry codes are standard numbers used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying businesses. The six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard code, but many business directories and databases continue to use the older four-digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC).

Industry Analysis - Qualitative Data

  • Business & Company Resource Center
    • Detailed company and industry profiles providing links to news and information. Provides company profiles, brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies and periodicals.
  • ABI-INFORM
    • Provides a wide selection of business resources. Includes trade publications, local / regional business publications (i.e. Grand Rapids Business Journal), major business magazines (i.e. Fortune, Business Week), business newspapers (i.e. Wall Street Journal), and scholarly journals.
  • LexisNexis Academic Universe
    • All full-text database provides variety of news, business, and legal sources including newspapers (regional, national, and international), company profiles (Hoover's Company Records, Standard & Poor's Register) and legal information (SEC Filings, US Federal and State Court Cases).

Industry Statistics - Quantitative Data

  • STAT-USA
    • Statistical data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, including general economic indicators, employment, manufacturing and industry, and housing and construction. Includes up to the quarter industry statistics.
  • Market Share Reporter (Print work in Miller Library Reference Collection)
    • An annual compilation of reported market share data on companies, products and services. Geographic area of coverage (beginning with 1996 edition) is North America: Canada, the United States and Mexico. The vast majority of entries are for the United States.
  • Census Bureau Statistics
    • Statistical Abstract of the United States
      • Go to Miller Library Reference Collection > HA202.U5 2009
      • Statistical tables published by U.S. Department of Commerce includes, but not limited to, industry statistics. Footnotes indicate original government source for each table, useful for further research.
    • Economic Census
      • Conducted every five years by the U.S. government, the census covers industries and geographic areas across the United States. Latest released economic census is 2002.
    • Census Bureau – Manufacturing, Mining, and Construction Statistics
      • Provides statistics in manufacturing, industrial, and construction activity. Includes Manufacturers’ Inventories, Shipments & Orders, Annual Survey of Manufactures , and Current Industrial Reports.
