Celebration on the Grounds

Cornerstone University students, staff and faculty celebrated the beginning of a new semester Sept. 12 with the first Celebration on the Ground event held on the school's campus.

The campus was converted into “a festival of games and entertainment” for Celebration on the Grounds, said Ryan Davis, assistant director of commuter life & student activities, who was one of the organizers of the event.

“The purpose of the event was to bring the campus closer together,” he said. “To start the year with a celebration of who we are, not only as an institution, but as a family,” said Davis.

“It is a day to give God praise through communing with our brothers and sisters in Christ.”

Festivities included inflatable games such as the bungee run and the joust, and lawn games such as a three legged race, water balloon volleyball, Frisbee golf, bocce ball and ladder ball.
Other activities included: a caricature artist, a picnic on the hill behind Quincer Hall, overlooking the pond; and live concerts throughout the day. Lunch was served at the Fieldhouse in the Hansen Athletic Center.

“It was a great day,”said Emily Faletti, a senior marketing major who lives off campus. “It was just a really nice day to hang out with friends on the lawn and take a break from homework.”

Many professors and staff brought their families to the event.

“There was a nice mixture of staff and students,” said Faletti, who met up with some friends at the event. “It was a great place to bring the kids and have fun.”

The idea originated in the spring and a committee was formed to help plan the event. It was named after the annual Celebration on the Grand event held the first weekend after Labor Day in Grand Rapids.

The planning team included: Davis; Cynthia Wiltheiss, director of food services; Rebecca Kleinbrink, facility services coordinator; Kay Landrum, director of student retention; Dave Weaver, media events technical director; and admissions counselors Christina Vinson and Brett Buckingham.
