CU Radio Sends Mission Team

Sep 30, 2009

Twenty WCSG listeners and two Cornerstone University Radio employees will be going on a missions trip to Guatemala this October.

They will provide basic medical care to people whose village, Panabaj, was destroyed in a volcanic mudslide.

“We'll also be doing evangelism through VBS-type programming, audio Bibles and having fun with kids in schools and orphanages,” said Greg Yoder, network news director of CU Radio and executive director of Mission Network News, who will be on the team.
John Balyo, host of the Morning Show on WCSG will also represent Cornerstone University Radio.

“This particular trip will involve a team comprised mostly of nurses and doctors,” said Balyo. “Malnutrition and starvation is a huge problem in Guatemala right now, along with lice, H1N1 and other viruses. Many of the people need dental and vision help too, so we'll be able to provide some of those resources.

“I never come back from a missions trip the same way I went. It changes you. It causes you to think outside yourself and realize how truly blessed we are in our country.”
The team has spent time planning for the trip and getting to know one another, said Chris Lemke, interim vice president of broadcasting.

They will leave Grand Rapids on Oct. 10 and return on Oct. 17.

The trip is the latest of the annual mission trips sponsored by Cornerstone University Radio. It was organized by WSCG and Mission Network News and is part of a partnership with Orphan Outreach, a ministry dedicated to helping orphans and vulnerable children around the world.

Mission Network News has partnered with the ministry since it was founded two years ago. Cornerstone University Radio has partnered with them on four missions trips with Orphan Outreach, including a recent missions trip to help single mothers and children in Honduras, said Yoder.

According to Balyo, the team will also be partnering with a Guatemalan church that has been reaching out to the village.
