After a two year hiatus, the Golden Eagles Pep Band is back.
The band will play at all home basketball games. It made its debut at Midnight Madness on Oct. 8.
“I think the pep band will add some excitement and make our games more like a college atmosphere for college basketball,” said Kim Elders, head coach of the men’s basketball team.
The resurrected band currently consists of nine musicians, including Jared Heddens, director of the band and an adjunct instructor at the university. It is composed of music majors as well as students who just enjoy playing music.
In the past, the pep band has consisted of small groups up to 30 members, Heddens said.
“I am really glad the pep band has been resurrected,” said Carla Fles, head coach of the women’s basketball team. “I think it can develop more school spirit and excitement surrounding sporting events.”
The pep band is a class on campus, but participants do not pay for the credit. Pep band members also receive free admission to all home games, free concessions and a free Cornerstone University Golden Eagles Pep Band t-shirt.
The process of bringing the Pep Band back has been a cooperative effort between the Fine Arts Division and the Athletic Department, as well as specific encouragement from the school administration,” said Heddens.
