Cornerstone University’s student newspaper, The Herald, received 14 Michigan Press Association (MPA) awards in the College Editorial Contest for the second consecutive year.
The weekly paper received first place for Overall Newspaper Design and second place for General Excellence competing against other Division 2 college newspapers including Albion College, Hillsdale College, Ferris State University and Calvin College.
Student Tim Devaney received second place for Journalist of the Year.
“I think The Herald’s ability to continue to be recognized as one of the best collegiate newspapers in its division goes back to the dedication, effort, skill and time that the student editors, reporters, copy editors and photographers invest week in and week out in CU’s campus newspaper,” said Alan Blanchard, associate professor of journalism and The Herald faculty adviser.
Other awards are:
o Sports Feature, Honorable Mention, “Returning with Scars” by Tim Devaney
o Column, News or Sports, first place, “Kendra Will be Missed” by Tim Devaney
o Sports Page Design, third place, “Side Bump Spread” by Tim Devaney
o Feature Page Design, third place, “Greece Trip Spread” by David Duhon

“The fact that The Herald and its student journalists won six first place, three second place, three third place awards and two honorable mentions competing with much larger and better resourced schools is a testament to the ability of the students and the effectiveness of the journalism education they are receiving at CU,” Blanchard said.
Articles, photos and pages are entered into the MPA contest by The Herald’s student editors each spring semester.
