My name is Shannon Ericson, I'm 19 and I'm from Mahtomedi, MN, a small suburb of the Twin Cities. I'm currently a sophomore at Cornerstone University studying Social Work, and minoring in Spanish.
I live in Pickitt Hall, known as the lively dorm, and I'm really loving it! I have two really great roommates and the community life there is great.
As far as extra-curricular activities go, I'm a member of the University Chorale, so I have a lot of rehearsing and concerts, but it's a lot of fun. I'm also working in the admissions office and really enjoying talking to prospective students and helping them out with the admission process. In addition to that, I'm trying to be active in a student group called ACT:S which is striving to fight social injustice like world hunger, child labor, trafficking, HIV/AIDS, malaria, etc. There are really a lot of things that you can get involved with, it's just choosing which one to do!
I came to Cornerstone completely by God's leading. None of my family members have ever gone to Cornerstone and I only heard of it because it was similar to some other schools I was looking at closer to home. Really, the deciding factor is when I came to visit. The people and students of Cornerstone were so friendly and hospitable, and I really could feel Christ's love through them. None of the other schools I visited had the same impact on me that Cornerstone had and really, it was by God's grace that I chose to come here.
God is teaching me how to really follow Him. For a while, it was a challenge for me to figure out how to minister to people at a college campus where everyone already knows the Lord! But He's taught me that to follow Him doesn't take any big actions, but is all about the little things.
When I graduate, I hope to do one of two things: I'd either like to be working with refugees in the social work field, or serving the Lord on the missions field. Either way, I want to show God's love for others wherever he leads me.
My hobbies and interests are pretty similar to other students my age: I love music and singing, spending time with my family and friends, being outdoors, and reading.
My favorite thing about CU is the Christ-filled atmosphere. I love how much the students really care about seeking and following the Lord and how the teachers are encouraging their students in their walks of faith. It is so encouraging!
One thing that I think students should know about CU and the college search process is this: Visits are so important! They really do make a difference and provide so much more information and experience to the colleges you're looking at. But, even over this is prayer. Pray that the Lord will guide you to where He wants you to be. That is the most important thing of all.
Some words of wisdom for high schoolers: take school seriously. It will really help you in your studies when you come to college. But also, make the relationships in your life important too. While academics are incredibly important, the relationships you build with others have an even deeper meaning. Most importantly, seek to live your life for Christ. Don't be afraid to stand up for what you believe in, because some of the people that you are going to school with now, you most likely won't see again. Make a positive, lasting impact on their lives, and pray that God will open their eyes.
