CU Alumni Invest in Men's Basketball Program
A group of alumni recently committed themselves to a project that they believe will take the Men’s Basketball program to the next level. Al Gortmaker (’99), Director of the Men’s Basketball Alumni Committee, describes the goals of the project, saying, “We want to join with alumni from 1952 to 2012 in an effort that will enhance the competitive position of the program, and further advance the mission of helping student-athletes build lives that reflect the glory of Christ our Lord.”
In a letter to former players, Gortmaker urged his fellow alumni to invest into refurbishing the locker room, and to invest in the lives of current student athletes.
Nine other alumni have partnered with Gortmaker in leading the project, many of whom have stayed connected to the team as prayer sponsors. “The guys on the team love this program,” says Assistant Coach Eric DeSantis. “No other basketball team has the connections with former players that CU has established through prayer sponsorship.” The Men’s Basketball Alumni Committee hopes this project will expand those connections to a broader network of alumni.
Gortmaker was a member of the 1999 Men’s Basketball national championship team and describes his experience on the team as transformative. “For many of us, our experience in the basketball program was instrumental in developing who we are as leaders in our families, in our churches, and in our respective workplaces. Right now we have an opportunity to enhance that experience for an emerging generation of young men.”
