Members of Cornerstone University's Alumni Board advance the initiatives of the Alumni Relations Office, represent the priorities of our graduates and serve as passionate advocates of the university's mission.
Alumni Association Board Members
Dr. Rick Koole (B.A. ’70) is the chairman of the Cornerstone Alumni Board. In addition, he continues to serve as a member of the Cornerstone Board of Trustees where he chairs the Governance Committee.
After graduating from Cornerstone, Rick attended Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, and then went on to earn a master's and a doctorate in educational leadership from Western Michigan University.
After many years in both education administration and pastoral ministry, Rick currently serves as the Senior Pastor of LifePointe Church in Fallbrook, Calif. In addition to his pastoral duties, he is currently the board chairman of the Pacific Church Network.
Rick is married to Carolyn Church (B.S. ’99), and the two have five children and an ever-increasing bunch of grandchildren.
Paul Doane's (B.A. ’74) professional career in college admissions and financial aid spans 36 years, 10 of which were spent at Cornerstone. He currently serves as associate director of financial aid compliance at Grand Rapids Community College and is actively involved in the Michigan Student Financial Aid Association.
Following graduation from Cornerstone, Paul also attended Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. He is a member of Grandville Baptist Church in Grandville, Mich., where he serves as a deacon and Sunday School Teacher. Paul and his wife Nancy (B.A. ’76) have been blessed with three adult children and eight grandchildren.
Andrew Smith (B.A. ’77, M.Div. ’81) graduated from Cornerstone with a degree in religion and graduated from GRTS with a degree in pastoral studies. He currently serves as an associate professor of New Testament at Cornerstone, as well as serving on the Alumni Board.
Outside of work, Andrew is an avid golfer, reader and is the radio voice of the Cornerstone Golden Eagles men's basketball team.
Terri Fowler (B.A. ’81) graduated from Cornerstone with a degree in speech communication. She currently works as a chaplain for Market Place Chaplains USA. She serves employees of Gordon Food Services and Our Daily Bread by making hospital calls, assisting in funerals, performing weddings and coming alongside of those employees in moments of crisis.
She and her husband, Bruce Fowler, currently reside in Grand Rapids and attend Ada Bible Knapp Campus, where she and Bruce serve as life group leaders. They have two adult daughters; Layne lives in Grand Rapids, and Meredith lives in Burlington, Vt. In her free time, Terri likes to travel, garden and spend time with friends.
Al Gortmaker (B.A. ’99) graduated from Cornerstone with a degree in business management. He currently serves as a financial advisor for Edward Jones Investments. He also directs the men's basketball player sponsorship program.
Al was a team player on the CU basketball team from 1995-99. He is now living in Caledonia with his wife, Bethany, another CU alum, and their four children. He enjoys camping with his family, outdoor recreation and other sports.
Jacob Hoogendyk (B.A. ’99) graduated from Cornerstone with a degree in Business Marketing. He is currently the regional vice president of Michigan for US Floors, a division of Shaw Industries.
He is married to Jennifer Koning, and they have four children: Eliza, Marta, William and Wesley. They reside in Grand Rapids and are members of Highland Hills Baptist Church. Jacob enjoys traveling and spending time with this family and looks forward to getting plugged back into the Cornerstone community.
Sara Hill (B.S. ’11) graduated with a bachelor's in business administration, and she later completed her Master of Theological Studies from Methodist Theological School in Ohio. She is currently employed as a Spiritual Care Counselor at Hospice of Michigan, located in Big Rapids. She enjoys working with patients and their families to overcome difficult circumstances and views her work as an honor and privilege. She also is a licensed and certified pharmacy technician, currently serving on the Executive Board for the Michigan Society of Pharmacy Technicians.
Sara currently resides on Indian Lake in Howard City. She spends the majority of her time volunteering, whether it be in events like the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give or with the American Cancer Society, and advocates for human trafficking survivors through Rapha House. Sara loves nature photography and seizes any moment to capture scenic images. She enjoys reading, learning new things, watching hockey, golfing and spending time at Lake Michigan.
Josh Thayer (B.S. ’11) graduated from Cornerstone with a degree in Bible and sports management and will be sworn in as an Indiana State Trooper on Dec. 13, 2018. Prior to his appointment with the Indiana State Police, Josh previously worked at Oakland Christian School in Auburn Hills, Mich., for five years as the assistant athletic director and eventually the director of admissions.
During his time at CU, Josh played for the men's junior varsity basketball team for one season. During his senior year, Thayer served as an assistant coach for the men's JV basketball team. Josh also served as a small group leader in Crawford Hall and worked for the CU grounds crew for all four years.
Josh married his best friend, Alyssa immediately after graduation, and they have been married for seven years. They have twin daughters, Madison and Mackenzie, and currently reside in Noblesville, Ind.
When not spending time with this family, Josh enjoys playing basketball, running, cycling, being outdoors and watching/attending IndyCar races.
Ty Mason (B.S. ’15) graduated from Cornerstone with a degree in finance and sports management. He currently serves as a commercial loan officer for Chemical Bank in the West Michigan Region, assisting businesses and non-profits achieve their goals by offering guidance and support as well as various banking and financial services.
Ty also serves as a youth basketball coach and skill development trainer with players all across the West Michigan area. He was a member of the men's basketball team at Cornerstone from 2011-15 and was the captain of the National Championship team in 2015.
Ty is married to Katelyn, who is also a Cornerstone graduate and former All-American for the women's basketball team. Katelyn currently works as a sales and marketing support specialist at Kraft Business Systems and serves as the assistant varsity girls' basketball coach at Forest Hills Central with her twin sister. They reside in Grand Rapids, Mich., with their one-year-old son Isaiah. They are expecting twins in April 2019.
