Honoring Kyle Thompson.

Kyle Thompson (M.A. '01) is the Co-founder and current Executive Director of Beacon of Hope Ministries in Holland, Mich. Beacon of Hope was founded in 2002 and provides no-fee counseling services to the community.

Since the ministry's inception, Kyle has listened to the voice and direction of God to lead the ministry. This attention has allowed for the privilege of opening three satellite sites in Michigan (Grandville, Portland, Holt/Mason).

Kyle has performed many roles within the ministry, starting with being the only counselor there. Once he hired interns, he became their supervisor and began fundraising for the ministry as well. Since 2007, 51 of a total 60 interns have represented Grand Rapids Theological Seminary.

As the ministry has grown, so have his responsibilities. Today, he focuses on supervising certified counselors, fundraising, and being Beacon of Hope's spokesperson in the community.

His journey to being a non-profit counselor was not a direct one. After college, he worked in sales and had much success. However, God was calling him to go back to school, yet it took the loss of Kyle's successful job for him to start listening to God. This led him to attend GRTS and, after he graduated, to found Beacon of Hope Ministries.

Kyle says that he does his best to express his faith every day at Beacon of Hope. He shares his faith with his clients, which can be a challenge when they do not share the same faith. But he hopes that his life story and character will shine the light of the Gospel into their lives.

He owes much of Beacon of Hope's success to GRTS' counseling program, which grounds counseling in Scripture and provides invaluable experience.

In his daily life, he seeks to be a servant leader at home and at work. He also enjoys speaking at churches, clubs, and schools about his ministry and occasionally preaches at his church.

Kyle is on pace to graduate in May 2017 with his doctorate from Olivet Nazarene University. He hopes this Ed.D. in Ethical Leadership will open doors for the ministry to continue to grow and listen to the voice of God. A dream of Kyle's is to take Beacon of Hope overseas.

Kyle and his wife of 23 years, Kristin, reside in Zeeland, Mich., with their two daughters, Natalee (15) and Megan (11).
