CU Alum Gives Back Through Scholarships

By Audrey Wierenga on April 8, 2020

Scholarships provide a tangible way to help students pay for college, and they are additionally meaningful when they are funded by a proud CU alumnus who is assured of the value of a distinctive Christian education in a chaotic world.

Cornerstone University alum Jeremy Underwood (B.A. ’06) sees the opportunity to give back to his alma mater as a logical next step. While studying science and physical education at Cornerstone, he also ran on the men's track team. He continued to stay involved with Cornerstone, and in 2011, his brother-in-law also began to run on the team. In 2016, Underwood joined the Golden Eagle advisory board under Aaron Sagraves, athletic director for CU.

Underwood now works as an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance. "Cornerstone helped me shape who I am in Christ," Underwood said, "and I have been able to bring that spirit to my insurance agency." Underwood's philosophy on providing insurance is based on trust and respect.

Both mentorship and sponsorship are important to Underwood as a Cornerstone alumnus. Bob Sack, vice president of advancement at Cornerstone, and Matt Taylor, statewide sales director for Farm Bureau Insurance and fellow alum, spearheaded the idea for institutional scholarships. "They are a fun way to give back to students," Underwood said. "It's an honor to be in a position to be able to offer something."

Scholarships are available to dedicated CU students who are in good academic standing, are children of Farm Bureau employees, demonstrate the values of the Ron Blue Center, are student-athletes or are involved in Enactus. Farm Bureau Insurance also connects frequently with students and alumni for internship and job opportunities.

"My prayer is that this partnership between Farm Bureau Insurance and CU blesses the university and the students that are involved," Underwood said.
