On Jan. 22, Cornerstone University will celebrate the beginning of construction on a long-awaited new chapel.
The event will be held during the regularly scheduled University Chapel service at 10 a.m., starting in the Dining Hall.
Students will write a verse reference or a short prayer on small, blue and white pennant flags that will be placed on the construction fence around the site as a reminder of our commitment to pray for the project and those who will be involved in the construction process.
The celebration will feature comments and introductions of special guests, including the “Mountain Movers” prayer group that has been faithfully supporting this project in prayer.
Renderings and a video depiction of the new building will be unveiled during the celebration.
The name of the new chapel will be unveiled during the final moments of the dedication ceremony outside on the construction site. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the first worship service (a very short one due to the weather) on the site.
“With growing enrollment and strategic opportunities to maximize our capacity to graduate influencers, we are expanding and adding physical facilities that relate directly to the success of our mission,” said Bob Sack, executive director of marketing and communications at CU.
A $23 million fundraising campaign titled “CU Influence” is almost complete. A small percentage of the remained needed funds will be raised this year to completely pay for the construction.
The design of the new chapel is highly missional. It is designed for community worship at CU with seating designed in a round space to reflect a commitment to actualize faith both vertically and horizontally.
“As a Christ-centered university we are building a facility that is Christ-worthy,” said Dr. Joe Stowell, president of CU. “No other space on campus will draw worshippers to Christ with a sense of awe, transcendence, inspiration and intimacy.”
In addition, the chapel will provide the Music Division with new and expanded teaching and practice suites, rehearsal space for worship teams and small ensembles, as well as faculty offices and teaching space.
