Night of Nets

A joint effort by Cornerstone University, Calvin College and Hope College’s men’s and women’s soccer programs will raise funds to save 20,000 lives in Zambia this fall.

The fourth annual Night of Nets will take place Sept. 14, 17 and Oct. 1, 2.

“These three Christian universities are coming together to accomplish great good in the name of Jesus in our world,” said Chip Huber, dean of student engagement at Cornerstone University who started the fundraiser four years ago.

For the past three years, Cornerstone has held Night of Nets to raise funds for the bed nets and personally deliver them to those in need.

This year, he has enlisted the help of Calvin and Hope Colleges to make an even bigger impact.

Each $6 admission to the specified games will be used to purchase an insecticide-treated bed net that will aid in the prevention of the spread of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa.

Why?

Because every night more than 2,000 children worldwide die from malaria.

“Spread by mosquitoes, malaria is one of the world’s deadliest predators, killing more than 750,000 children under the age of 5 every year,” Huber said.

This year’s goal is to raise $60,000 to purchase 10,000 bed nets that will improve the lives and futures of more than 20,000 children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Donations for malaria prevention work will also be taken at the games or can be made online at www.cunightofnets.com. Donations can also be made to support an athlete on one of the three teams.

Athletes and coaches from each college’s team have been invited to travel to Zambia in the summer of 2014 to distribute the bed nets and see the great need for spiritual and physical transformation in Zambia. The teams will also participate in various soccer ministry opportunities.

“[This event exposes student athletes] to global needs across the world,” Huber said. “Their own spiritual lives and faith journeys will be deeply impacted by their engagement with the needs of the poor and the faith of the Zambian people.”
