Megan Tibbits, a recent Cornerstone University alumni, is rising to fame on ABC’s “Rising Star,” a new singing competition.
Through the competition Tibbits performs for musical experts Josh Groban, Brad Paisley, Kesha and Ludacris. She advances week after week by receiving viewer votes through a phone app.
"I am blown away by the support," Tibbits wrote on her Facebook page. “I just feel so carried by my state.”
The show airs on Sunday’s at 9 p.m. on ABC. To vote for Tibbits and help her carry her talent through the competition, tune in and download the Rising Star Voting App. Her next performance will be July 29.
A native of Caro, Mich., she earned her bachelor’s degree in music education from CU in 2012 with hopes of launching a singing career. She was named “Female Singer/Songwriter of the Year” for the L.A. Music Awards earlier this year.
Growing up, Tibbits, 26, traveled the country with her family’s Christian band. This allowed her to experience different areas of the music industry and learn a number of instruments.
"I thought it was normal," she said in an interview on WOTV4. "I was always around music."
She explains her musical journey on her website: "I began tracking harmonies on albums at the age of six, playing piano by age seven, writing songs on guitar by age 12, and studying instruments such as harp, oboe and saxophone along the way. After graduating from CU, she joined the performance company “The Young Americans”, where she spent two years performing and teaching music in Europe, Japan and across the United States."
Her goal is to bring a message of purpose, faith and hope to the world through her music. Rising Star has allowed her to do just that.
"The whole thing feels a little unreal," she said in a TV interview. "I am honored and feel so supported and loved."
