CU Hosts 11 Annual Cornerstone Journalism Institute

Cornerstone University will host the 11th Annual Cornerstone Journalism Institute welcoming international students and participants from across the country.

The Institute, designed for high school students to experience life as professional reporters and photographers will be held July 21-26 on Cornerstone’s campus.

This year’s attendees include a student from Honduras and Canada and multiple states.

“Students get a compressed introduction to the basics of what it would be like to write or photograph professionally for a newspaper, magazine or online publication,” Blanchard said, “with instructors coming from the reporting, editing and photojournalism ranks of The Grand Rapids Press/MLive, the Indianapolis Star and other newspapers, as well as from CU professors.”

CJI is open to students entering grades 9-12 or their freshman year of college and will stay on campus and live like a college student for the week.

“They will experience what it’s like to face and meet deadlines, just like they would if they we working for a magazine, newspaper or TV/radio news station,” said CJI Executive Director and journalism instructor, Alan Blanchard.

Attendees receive laptops and other video or photo equipment needed during the week.

Students will have the opportunity to talk with professional newspaper reporters, editors and photographers.

At the end of the week, each student will have at least one of his or her stories published in the CJI newspaper, “CJI Times.” They will receive 25 copies of the newspaper to share with family and friends.

“What excites me about CJI is seeing how much students learn in just a week at the institute,” says Blanchard, “the students gain confidence as they interview subjects, write their stories and take photographs to illustrate those stories for a newspaper.”

Cost for the week is $374, plus a $25 application fee. Financial need scholarships are available.

Attendance is limited to 24 students. There are a few spots left. For more information, contact Blanchard at: or at 616.222.1504 – more information, including application materials, is available at
