New Creation Cupcakes to Host Bakery Shower

News April 11, 2016

When Cornerstone University student Brittany Jacobson (B.A. ’16) attended a human trafficking conference in 2013, she knew that God was telling her to do something and that staying back just wasn’t an option. An idea was born and she began baking cupcakes for girls and women in the sex industry.

Today, New Creation Cupcakes (NCC) is a thriving organization that strives to be the hands and feet of Jesus by bringing cupcakes to more than 65 women and girls in the sex industry each month. New Creation Cupcakes has also catered dozens of weddings and other events, giving 100% of the proceeds back to their outreach efforts. They have expanded into Traverse City, Cadillac, and Grand Rapids; and they enter into five strip clubs and two massage parlors every week. They give cupcakes to these women not with the intention of condemning them, but simply out of the love of and with the hope of, sharing the gospel.

So what’s next for this organization? They’re dreaming of a bakery.

Jacobson says, “Since being in the clubs, and even local safe houses in our area, one need became very clear. The girls we reach out to need new jobs. While housing is much needed, as are food, clothing and other necessities, many of these women can’t afford to sustain all of those other needs without reliable employment.”

A fundraiser was launched this year to raise funds for New Creation Cupcakes to purchase a space to provide sustainable employment to women coming out of the sex industry.

In partnership with the university’s Enactus chapter, New Creation Cupcakes is hosting their first bakery shower. The shower works just like a baby shower or a wedding shower. The organization is registered at Target and shoppers can purchase items such as cleaning supplies, cupcake tins and other various items that will be needed to get the bakery on its feet. Jacobson says that if all of the items are purchased, it will save them over $3,000 in final costs.

Jacobson explained the need for this expansion. “We want to be able to create with them a personalized care plan as they transition out of lives of trauma and exploitation. We want to be the love they so deserve, and we want to bring them to Jesus in the process. Opening a bakery will allow us to expand outreach and employ these beautiful women. These girls need a space like this, and God willing, we want to be the ones who provide it.”

Jacobson already knows of girls who are interested in jobs with NCC. She plans on starting an internship program in which the girls will bake alongside of experienced volunteers during the busy wedding season. At the end of this time, the girls will receive a stipend, and they will have gained valuable job experience and be able to build their resume.

Jacobson says, “It’s a good start for where we’re at, and we’re loving this process with them. It has been so much fun. I’ve seen so much of the outreach side that this restorative process was foreign to me until the last few months, and it’s so cool to see God working—even as we’ve been faithful walking out this journey to a bakery.”

The bakery shower will be held on Tuesday, April 26 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Cornerstone University in Faber Hall Room 116. Parking is available outside the Campus Bookstore.
