Seminary Starts Hiring Search for New Professor of Counseling

News Jan. 24, 2019

Given the demand for its counseling program and a desire to ensure long-term compliance with the student-to-faculty ratio requirements set by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP), Grand Rapids Theological Seminary (GRTS) has started a faculty search for a new professor of counseling.

“The Master of Arts in Counseling program is growing substantially, so there is a felt need for additional faculty to support the program,” Tara Kram, associate dean, said. “The ideal candidate will have a strong faith commitment and biblical knowledge as well as a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision, including experience both as a professional counselor and as a professor.”

With nearly half of GRTS students enrolled in the M.A. Counseling program, the seminary is preparing a self-study for submission to CACREP as part of its application for accreditation.

“The new faculty hire will be required to align with CACREP requirements for clinical mental health counseling programs as GRTS is in the process of pursuing CACREP accreditation,” Kram stated. “GRTS desires to continue to integrate a Christian foundation with clinical mental health counseling to prepare students for professional counseling roles.”

As GRTS anticipates the addition of a new faculty member to its learning community, Kram summarized the current priorities in graduate-level counseling education.

“Diversity and inclusion are of utmost importance, and accrediting organizations and licensing boards are emphasizing the importance of multicultural counseling education,” Kram said. “There is also an ongoing demand for counseling individuals with addictions, and GRTS offers an addictions specialization to prepare counselors to meet this demand.”
