Shawn Newhouse Receives Nomination From Local Magazine

News Feb. 14, 2020

Dr. Shawn Newhouse, senior vice president of traditional undergraduate academics at Cornerstone University, has been nominated for a Brilliance Award, an honor facilitated by local magazine West Michigan Woman.

Newhouse has been nominated in the Team Player category. According to West Michigan Woman’s website, a team player is described as “going above and beyond to help whenever and wherever needed … the woman deserving of the Team Player award creates a welcoming, supportive, cooperative work environment.” Newhouse was honored and humbled to receive news that she had been nominated.

“I’m not a person who seeks individual acclaim,” Newhouse said, “rather I desire to see successful outcomes for the institution and the way to accomplish this is by working collaboratively with capable colleagues.”

Newhouse cites some recent successes with Cornerstone’s leadership team and faculty as evidence of the power of collaboration. During her five years at the university, Newhouse has helped gain accreditation for the Business Division, coordinate institutional partnerships for the university’s nursing and engineering programs and worked to improve the organizational culture within the institution. She has also been involved with strategic planning with regard to student success and diversity.

Newhouse’s colleagues affirm this nomination as a reflection of Newhouse’s focus on collaboration. “Dr. Shawn Newhouse routinely demonstrates the ability to ignite strategic innovations with vision and courage, while trusting others enough to own and adapt these innovations during the planning and execution,” said Dr. John VerBerkmoes, executive vice president for academics and dean of Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. “Her commitment to enable individuals and groups to contribute and flourish in this way is truly unique.”

“I’m not interested in working in contexts as a ‘lone ranger’ and believe more can be accomplished together,” Newhouse said. “I would be humbled to receive the award but even more excited to share it with my colleagues at Cornerstone who have walked with me to face challenges and create opportunities that will ensure the future viability of Cornerstone.”

The Brilliance Awards will take place on Thursday, April 30, 2020.
