CU Online is a university-wide initiative providing coordination and support of the three educational divisions of Cornerstone University in the area of online education. Its primary goal is to increase the number of high-quality online undergraduate degrees available to individuals (in the United States and globally) who find it difficult or impossible to attend class in a physical location.
CU Online does not admit and register students, nor does it develop and deliver online courses; rather it facilitates these activities related to online learning by providing leadership, direction and support to the entire university community. Students are actually admitted and register with each specific division within the university depending on the program desired.

How does online learning work?
Different Than a Traditional Classroom
You may have already experienced learning in a traditional classroom environment. In traditional educational settings, students go to the school campus to locate a classroom where most of their learning occurs. In an online environment, students gather in a virtual classroom. Their learning environment is found on any computer that is connected to the Internet. This is one of many aspects of online education that students find attractive. The idea of not commuting to campus and sitting in a classroom is very appealing, particularly to those who are not full-time students, have a family, are employed full-time or have other responsibilities that require more time away from home.
Online learning takes place in the context of a web-based Learning Management System (LMS). The benefit of using an LMS is that all necessary elements for the course such as: viewing course materials, communicating with your professor and fellow-classmates, quizzing and grading are integrated into one location. Cornerstone University’s LMS is easy to use and does not require any advanced computer knowledge; only certain basic computer skills are necessary to succeed as an online student.
Relevant Learning Environment
An online student already has their own unique environment, such as work, family, or local church interaction. Each of these environments contribute to a relevant, practical and individualized online-learning experience. It builds upon the social and circumstantial, daily activity in which the student participates. It is especially important for adult learners to bring learning home, specifically offline. In many ways these all provide a richer learning environment than that of the traditional face-to-face classroom.
The computer and Internet connection for accessing course work are the primary means of participating in an online class and thus are significant contributors to academic success at Cornerstone University. It is critical that students have reliable, and frequent unhindered access to a computer that meets the minimum requirements with a broadband Internet connection (i.e. DSL or Cable).
Review the minimum requirements to ensure you have the necessary software and hardware to complete all aspects of a CU Online degree program and courses. Also, note that select online courses include a requirement for live presentations conducted via the web. A webcam, microphone and speakers/headphones will be required to participate in these assignments. When there is a live web-based presentation or online meeting required in a course, professors schedule the meeting(s) weeks in advance with multiple options so students can make the necessary arrangements to participate.
Take your learning on the road. Thanks to mobile technology and online education programs, whatever location you find yourself in can be transformed into a classroom. By providing textbooks and other learning resources electronically, in formats that are accessible on mobile devices, Cornerstone University is making mobile learning a real possibility for students. Refer to the resources on this webpage to discover how you can get started using mobile technologies for learning.
