Certification Information

To register for certification or additional endorsements, go to the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS) page. If you are a candidate for teacher certification, you will need to initiate the certification recommendation process by self-registering in MOECS
 

Professional Certification

Requirements to upgrade to the Professional Certificate (below)

  1. Successfully teach for three years within his or her content area and at the grade level of endorsement indicated on the Provisional Certificate.
  2. Has presented evidence that he/she holds an earned Master’s degree or has completed a minimum of 18 semester hours in a planned course of study after the issuance of the state provisional certificate. The planned program must be completed at an approved teacher education institution, which will recommend you for your Professional Education Certificate.
  3. Completed 3 credits in Reading/Special Education. Course is required as of July 1, 2009.
  4. This certificate must be renewed every five years at an approved teacher training college. To renew the Professional Education Certificate, you must show evidence that you have successfully completed six additional semester hours of credit from an approved teacher education institution, or an equivalent amount of credit in State Board of Education Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs) as a condition of renewal.

First Renewal

In-state Candidates – Must have completed at least 9 semester hours of an 18-hour planned program since the issuance of the Michigan teaching certificate or hold an approved master’s or higher degree from a Michigan accredited teacher preparation institution. Must apply directly through the certification office at the institution where the credit was completed.

Out-of-state Candidates – Must have completed at least 10 semester hours of credit through one or more teacher preparation institutions outside of Michigan since the issuance of their
Provisional teaching certificate or hold an approved master’s or higher degree earned at any time from an out-of-state teacher preparation institution. You must apply through our office.

Second Renewal

In-state Candidates – Must have completed the 18-hour planned program at a Michigan accredited teacher preparation institution, or an approved master’s or higher degree at any time.
Must apply directly through the certification office at the Michigan institution where the credit was completed.

Out-of-state Candidates – Must have completed at least 18 semester hours in an endorsement program or a specific master’s program at a regionally accredited and approved teacher preparation institution outside the state of Michigan since the issuance of the Provisional certificate, or hold an approved master’s or higher degree earned at any time from an out-of-state teacher preparation institution. You must apply through our office. Applications are available on our website or by contacting the office directly. (The endorsement program must be in a teachable subject area as recognized by the state of Michigan.)
