As well as being the Director of the Journalism Department at Cornerstone University, Alan Blanchard serves as Adviser of the Herald newspaper, Executive Director of Cornerstone Journalism Institute, and Associate Professor of Journalism.
He received Cornerstone University’s Outstanding Service Award in 1998 and 2005, and has received over two dozen professional awards from organizations including the Michigan Press Association, Michigan AP Editorial Association, Michigan League of Home Dailies, Hoosier State Press Association and the New Mexico Publishers’ Association. Alan Blanchard co-published a peer-reviewed article with Dr. Stephen Lacy entitled, “The Impact of Public Ownership, Profits and Competition on Number of Newsroom Employees and Starting Salaries in Mid-Sized Daily Newspapers.” His professional interests include media economics, and print and electronic broadcast media issues.
Alan served with the 199th Supply Co. near Peru, Indiana, in the U.S. Army Reserve. His unit operated in rural and urban areas of Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War in 1991. From 1974-78, Blanchard served in the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio, Texas; Monterey, California; and Minot, North Dakota. Outside of work, he started a free service to help residents in his community and church draft to polish their resumes and develop their interviewing and job network skills.
