All music degrees require participation in various ensemble activities. Incoming first-year students receive placement into one of three large ensembles. To learn more about available ensemble and touring opportunities, select a group from the list below.

Chancel Singers | Vocal Ensemble

Director: Andrea Savara

A choir for full-time students interested in serving the Lord through the gift of singing. Emphasis is placed on voice building, teamwork and ministry to the campus community, presenting two formal concerts each term.
Membership granted by placement audition during the first week of classes.

 

Contemporary Ensemble | Instrumental & Vocal Ensemble

Director: Michael Stockdale, DipRCM

Ensembles comprised of bass, drums, guitars, keyboards and vocalists. Ensembles provide opportunities to perform from the broad umbrella of popular music (1950-present). Groups explore various textures, development of charts and arrangements, microphone techniques, lead and background vocals, improvisation and listening skill.

 

Credo | Vocal Ensemble | Touring Group

Director: Kent Walters, D.W.S.

An eight-member vocal ensemble specializing in sacred and secular a cappella music that strives for excellence with the goal of glorifying God through music. The group enjoys an eclectic repertoire from Renaissance madrigals to contemporary popular songs, including hymn arrangements and vocal jazz.

CU Brass | Instrumental Ensemble | Touring Group

A quintet of trumpets, trombone, French horn and tuba. With a repertoire that spans the centuries, CU Brass ministers by sharing the melodic beauty of instrumental praise. The ensemble also performs many beloved hymns, including "Crown Him with Many Crowns," "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name," and "The Lord's Prayer."

Pep Band | Instrumental Ensemble

Director: Jared Heddens

A highly energetic ensemble comprised of winds, bass and drums. Pep Band serves to enhance the atmosphere at Cornerstone University men's and women's basketball games, by performing rock, funk, jazz and traditional pep band cheers.
Membership is open to all students. 

 

Red Letter Edition | Instrumental & Vocal Ensemble | Touring Group

Director: Michael Stockdale, DipRCM

A contemporary ensemble comprised of six or more members. The band performs a wide range of worship music by artists such as Chris Tomlin, David Crowder and Hillsong, serving as musical ambassadors of Christ and facilitators of worship for the community that aligns with David's example in Psalm 40:3.

Symphonic Winds | Instrumental Ensemble

Director: Joan Van Dessel, Mus.D.

A large ensemble of woodwind, brass and percussion players committed to quality performance of wind ensemble and concert band literature. Symphonic Winds performs twice each semester including one full-length, formal concert. A weekend retreat is held each fall to foster musical growth and camaraderie.
Membership granted by audition only and requires a one-year commitment. 

 

University Chorale | Vocal Ensemble

Director: Kent Walters, D.W.S.

A select concert choir, open to full-time students by audition. Chorale provides exposure to outstanding choral literature from the sixteenth century to the present. The purpose of the Chorale is to explore beauty in choral art, both sacred and secular, in the context of Christian community to the glory of God.

Woodwind Quintet | Instrumental Ensemble

Director: Joan Van Dessel, Mus.D.

The Cornerstone University Woodwind Quintet consists of flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon. Membership is determined by the director of Symphonic Winds at the university.

 

Worship Ensemble | Instrumental & Vocal Ensemble

Director: Gerald Longjohn, Ph.D. and Susan Whaley

A small ensemble comprised of drums, bass, keyboard, guitars and vocalists, preparing and ministering music for congregational singing. Students will not only develop related musical skills, but also ministry skills such as calls to worship, scripture reading and public prayer.
