Dr. John Hilber spoke this week in our seminary chapel. He explained that Moses answers the question, “What does an Appropriate Presence look like?” in Leviticus 19:2: “Be holy because the Lord your God is holy.”

Dr. Hilber walked through verses 1-18 of the chapter and explained how these laws show God’s heart for His people. Where one may have expected Dr. Hilber to explain “this is the Law, but Jesus…,” he showed how these laws, and the God behind them, still call for our obedience today as we seek to be Appropriately Present in our world.

Dr. John Hilber currently serves as a professor of Old Testament at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary and holds a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary as well as a Ph.D. from University of Cambridge. Dr. Hilber has been selected as one of two scholars chosen by the Templeton Foundation to study issues related to the creation narratives in Genesis. He will spend next year at Trinity Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill., working on this project. He is married to Char.
