Cornerstone Students Form Cure Chapter After Trip to Zambia

News Nov. 22, 2016

CURE U is a network of college students who are partnering together to bring healing to children with curable disabilities through CURE International. Students in CURE U chapters use their resources, passion and platform to truly make a difference in the lives of the kids around the world.

Cornerstone University’s CURE chapter was started by students Reid Mitchell (B.S. ’17) and Tori Johns (B.S. ’18). During a recent trip to Zambia over the summer with a group of 20 students, Reid and Tori saw a need after visiting a CURE hospital in Lusaka.

The CURE hospitals provide free health care, including orthopedics, neurosurgery, reconstructive surgery and maternity care. Costs are covered through fundraising efforts and by donations. Not only does CURE provide health care, but they also provide training for the Zambian doctors.

According to Reid, the current goal for CURE U is to “host an event to raise $1,000.00 for 2 clubbed feet surgeries through the Thriftmas Dance on Dec. 2.” The Thriftmas is an event that’s organized in Dining Commons by Student Activities where Cornerstone students can celebrate Christmas with a casual Christmas dance. Along with the dance, students will be able to also enjoy a hot chocolate bar and cookie decorating.

Currently, the CURE U chapter at Cornerstone University has 25 members (10 of which visited Zambia) and on-campus meetings are held every other Thursday.
