CU Super Science Explorers Program Provides Classroom Management Experience for Education Majors

News Oct. 12, 2016

Started in 2005, the Super Science Explorers program gives Cornerstone University juniors and seniors the chance to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom. Inviting area homeschool students to participate in four class sessions at the end of each semester, elementary education and secondary science education majors lead hands-on, topic-focused lessons.

Dr. Rob Keys, professor of science and the program’s faculty adviser, shared that the program offers a different theme each semester and, beginning this fall, features a new section for middle school students.

Program Information

For Cornerstone students enrolled in the university’s Science Methods course, leadership of the Super Science Explorers program acts as both a prerequisite for student teaching and as part of the students’ final exam.

Enrollment in each Super Science Explorers class is limited to 20-25 grade-level students. Sessions incorporate age-appropriate activities related to the assigned topics:

  • Kindergarten to First Grade: Light and sound.
  • Second to Third Grade: Weather and climate.
  • Fourth to Fifth Grade: Organisms and food chains.
  • Sixth to Eighth Grade: Chemical reactions.

The program runs for an hour and a half on Mondays and Wednesdays for two weeks.
