Advanced Standing

Academic credit from accredited institutions may count for advanced standing at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. Many higher-level courses completed at undergraduate institutions may be applied to degree programs at GRTS as advanced standing credits. Official advanced standing requests are made in consultation with faculty members and/or admissions counselors during the admissions process and after an admissions decision has been made. In keeping with the professional accrediting standards of the Association of Theological Schools, GRTS limits the use of advanced standing credits to a maximum of one-third of the graduate degree program.

Consideration for Advanced Standing

Consideration for advanced standing credit is limited to 300 or 400-level undergraduate courses in which a grade of B or better was achieved in an equivalent course. Advanced standing credits are evaluated either by an examination or by an assessment of a relevant sample of student work. New students have one calendar year from their original matriculation date at GRTS to apply for advanced standing credit. Credits granted by advanced standing will appear on the student’s academic transcript and contribute to program completion but will not be included in the student’s cumulative grade point average calculation.

Assessment

Students who have successfully completed undergraduate courses in Greek grammar and/or Hebrew grammar may sit for advanced standing examinations. These exams test the student’s knowledge of Greek and/or Hebrew Grammar and determine whether a student may proceed into the sequence of exegetical courses offered at GRTS. Advanced standing exams are regularly scheduled at the beginning of each fall semester. Students matriculating in spring or summer semesters must schedule exams with faculty members before the semester begins. Faculty member approval is required to sit for any advanced standing exam. Students must complete advanced standing paperwork for each exam before they sit for any exam. A $50 advanced standing fee for each exam must be paid to the Cornerstone accounting office before advanced standing material is evaluated.

Granting of Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is also awarded by evaluating undergraduate course content and student assignments. Students applying for advanced standing should submit three items to their admissions counselor. First, students should complete advanced standing paperwork for each undergraduate course under evaluation. Second, students should submit the syllabus of each course under evaluation. Third, students should submit at least one major assignment from each course. Students should choose assignments that reflect their best work. A $50 advanced standing fee for each course must be paid to the Cornerstone accounting office before advanced standing material is evaluated.
