During chapel this week, Dr. Rebecca DeYoung shared two stories of individuals who have experienced persistent injustice. First, she shared a story of her friend Douglas, who has been wrongly convicted and is living in the prison system. Despite the hardship of living in what seems like exile, Douglas chooses to trust God by persisting and living in victory and in peace. Then, Dr. DeYoung taught from Luke 1:46-56, the Magnificat, in which Mary is calling out to God for Him to crush the systems of injustice. Both Mary and Douglas demonstrate a passion for justice that is grounded in hope and humility. Our hope is in God, and we are called to do justice as His humble servants. ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Rebecca DeYoung is a professor of Philosophy at Calvin College. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Communication Arts from Calvin College, and her Master’s and PhD in Philosophy both from the University of Notre Dame. Her publications include, Vainglory: The Forgotten Vice, Glittering Vices: A New Look at the Seven Deadly Sins and Their Remedies, and Aquinas’s Ethics: Metaphysical Foundations, Moral Theory, and Theological Context.
