Cornerstone University Welcomes The Potter’s House High School to New Pilot Program - Teaching 101

News May 19, 2023

Investing in the next generation of teachers is vital to the future success of communities across Michigan. To address the growing need for teachers who feel called to the classroom in under-resourced neighborhoods in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Cornerstone’s Teacher Education Division is welcoming The Potter’s House High School as a partner in a new pilot program called Teaching 101

“Cornerstone University is excited to welcome students from The Potter’s House High School to inspire them to consider teaching as a career and calling to serve the southwest Michigan community,” said Dr. Laurie Burgess, associate professor of education and Teacher Education Division chair. “The Potter’s House High School and Cornerstone share a mission to offer a Christ-centered education to everyone, equipping them to serve God and society to their fullest potential.”

The new pilot program, including Cornerstone teacher education students, will work with students from May 22 to June 1, 2023, both on Cornerstone’s campus and at The Potter’s House Elementary School. Teaching 101 is designed to give high school students opportunities to learn about teaching as a calling, discuss important topics in education, and build relationships with students while aiding in elementary classrooms. Topics such as teaching, learning, thinking, motivation, classroom management, and relationship building will be examined within the context of a Christian worldview.

The Potter’s House High School

Located in southwest Michigan, The Potter’s House now enrolls more than 620 students representing a kaleidoscope of backgrounds and cultures, including over 30 countries of origin. Administrators and staff have seen God demonstrate his faithfulness to The Potter’s House in ways they never dreamed of or imagined in the lives of students and families.
