M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Grand Rapids Theological Seminary’s clinical mental health counseling graduates excel as empathetic, compassionate and character-driven leaders in our world for Christ. As a result, they demonstrate lifelong commitments toward learning, serving and leading which set them apart in their respective ministry and vocational contexts.

Program Learning Outcomes

To help develop biblically and culturally informed clinical mental health counseling practitioners, our Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling curriculum and course work requirements are designed to help you achieve core clinical mental health counseling and core biblical learning objectives.

Core Curriculum Learning Outcomes

  • Conduct basic biblical interpretation and application with reference to the English Bible texts.
  • State a basic understanding of the primary elements of Christian theology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, values and practices essential to personal spiritual formation.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling Learning Outcomes

  • State a personal philosophy of clinical mental health counseling that reflects awareness of personal beliefs, foundational theories and worldview integration.
  • Facilitate the clinical mental health counseling process for individuals, groups and/or families by providing consultations that foster awareness, growth and restoration that is based on established client-centered goals and a sound systemic framework.
  • Articulate and apply effective counseling strategies reflecting practical techniques and multicultural applications.
  • Demonstrate understanding and competency in the use of testing instruments and research interpretation in appraisal and diagnosis.
  • Demonstrate theoretical understanding and basic competency in career development counseling.
  • Exhibit understanding and compliance with the legal requirements and ethical codes of the counseling profession.

My awareness of my own privilege and bias has grown immensely in my time at GRTS. I see the world differently since engaging with issues of diversity at GRTS, thinking through the lenses of both biblical mandates and social justice issues.

Educational Effectiveness

  • 94% of Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling students achieved the highest outcome (i.e., making good progress in readiness for ministry) at the mid-point assessment.
  • 97% of Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling students achieved the highest outcome (i.e., making good progress in readiness for ministry) at the exit assessment.
  • 64% of Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling students who begin a degree progress to degree completion.
  • 83% of Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling alumni have obtained their Limited License or Full License as a Professional Counselor (LLPC/LPC).

This data was taken from the results of a variety of surveys and other evaluative instruments administered in recent years at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary.
